is it too late for me to improve my chances of getting into my first choice college?

Sunday, April 25th, 2010
Nida S asked:

im a junior in high school. and i want to get into unc. unc is pretty competitive. they only accept 35% of their applicants. im an in state resident and a lot of people from my area will probably be applying. i didn’t do so well my first two years of high school, but now im determined to do something about it. what can i do, besides improve my gpa (3.2 right now) and sat scores? is it too late for me? will taking easy unc courses help me? what kind of extra curriculars should i do? (im planning to do summer college this summer) its it really important that i join clubs at school? what if i just want to volunteer at the hospital, summer college etc.? are those enough?

my second question: if they say that you should apply for colleges before senior year or during first semester of senior year, does that mean that half or all of senior year doesnt even count? i mean, do colleges even see your grades from senior year?

Wednesday, April 14th, 2010
Ian Koch asked:

I remember when I was about to finish high school. Even long time before finishing, I started to think about and search for colleges and universities. Even the process of gathering information of relevant schools available for my interests, was quite a job and took me very long time to accomplish. Fortunately this has changed.

Imagine a more contemporary situation: You have just cleared high school and are now looking to get college admission. But you are confused - how do you select the right college? Where do you go to conduct your college search? Before you take this very important step towards furthering your studies and deciding on a possible career path, it is very necessary to know the strengths and weaknesses of the colleges where you are thinking about getting admission. A wrong or hurried choice could hurt you both financially and mentally.

In today’s internet age, it is comparatively easy to conduct your college search in a very short time. The best way to gain in-depth knowledge about the top colleges out there is to turn to the internet. Almost every well known college and university has a dedicated web portal that provides all necessary information for prospective students. Here you can find details about the various courses being offered, the subjects you can major in, the credits you will earn as well as details about fees and scholarships provided. Most colleges now also supply downloadable admission forms online.

If you have even a broad idea about the colleges you wish to gain admission to, you can confirm your choice via the internet. There are numerous sites and services available online that provide you in-depth reviews of various colleges and help you make a decision about the college best suited to your needs. All you have to do is to type in the key phrases that is most appropriate for your college search and viola…! You have a list of several hundreds of schools to approach.

In addition to detailed comparisons about the colleges of your choice, these sites also provide a host of other important details like residential facilities near or around the college campus, scholarships available, and often, help with getting admission to the college. Many of these sites also provide a ranking of the top colleges to help ease your decision making.

So if you are looking to enter college, it is necessary that you take the time to go through some of these sites and understand the merits of each college before deciding on one. Remember, it is not a one time choice but the opportunity of a life time and the right selection can get you set towards your career goal in the right way.

College Football Betting

Wednesday, April 7th, 2010
Jake Truman asked:

College football has been called a pure game. The players are out there on the field playing for glory and school pride. They don’t get paid and many of them are hoping to get a shot at the NFL. College football has no salary cap and there’s nothing stopping a school from signing many top recruits in the country. In fact, a recent report showing the top high school possible recruits revealed that a strong majority had USC and Texas on their list of college choices. Good players want to play at a good school. As a result good schools get better and poor schools get worse.

Year in and year out we hear the names of top programs like Ohio State over and over. College football is a freer game than the NFL. Coaches are not afraid to try trick plays and run the option. As a result, the points can really add up. One trap that many college football bettors that also bet the NFL fall into is handicapping the game as if it was the NFL. In the NFL, each and every player—no matter how bad they seem—is one of the top players in the entire football world. In college football, there are handfuls of NFL type players with scores of just average players.

In the NFL, you would never see a spread between two teams in the 40s. However, it’s a common occurrence each week in college football. Yes, those favorite teams cover too. One aspect of the game that must be on any bettors mind is motivation. If the game features two bitter rivals, the game could be a hot contest no matter what the talent level. If nothing else, the worse team could remain closer to the favorite. It’s important to analyze the coaches as well. What type of coach does each team have? Does the coach like to run often? Does the coach like to fire away even when the game is won?

Here’s an example. For years Air Force was a team that would run the ball 80% of the time—effectively too. If they were playing a team that’s soft on the run, look out. By knowing the team’s game plan, you can forecast the outcome better. If Air Force were playing a poorer team, record wise, that had a really solid run defense, what would you do? If you were simply a college football handicapper that looks at wins/loses, you would most likely fail.

In the pros, teams are more apt to adapt. If the run is not working, they go to the air. However, in college football, some programs are built a certain way and they stick to their game plan for the most part. If the team is built as a running powerhouse, they are going to keep at the run, because that’s all they can really do. The grand lesson here is to not look at college football like you would the NFL. While it’s football, it really is not the same game.

College Bound Students Affected by Economic Downturn

Sunday, April 4th, 2010
Dr. Stephen Jones asked:

High school seniors are faced with the daunting challenge of selection a college.  The current economic downturn is altering their college choice decisions.  In many cities unemployment is over 5 percent and some parents cannot afford the colleges that students are selecting as their first choice.  Colleges are affected too.  Students are comparing their financial aid packages and going where the money leads them.  Some college admission experts say that this may not be the best way to make a college choice.

Students are submitting multiple applications using websites like commonapp.com.  They want to know that they have options.  It is not unusual for parents to take their students on an east coast college tour.  The students and parents will visit five or six colleges to determine the one that is the best fit for their particular interest and financial circumstance.  This can be an expensive venture if the colleges require airplane flights that are far distances.  Some parents and students are making a decision to stay close to home.  They can reduce the cost of travel and some of the living expenses that are increased when a student is studying at a college that is away from home.

Some of the students are put on a wait list by prominent colleges.  This is not a reason for alarm.  Due to the economic downturn students who are on the wait list are receiving new acceptance letters.  Some colleges are not getting the number of applications that they expected.  This has forced colleges to scramble to make their numbers.  College admission offices may call students to make them a financial aid package that they cannot refuse. Some financial aid offices are able to offer a better financial aid package because more money is available due to students who have not accepted their offer.

Making the right college choice is a frustrating experience for many college students.  They listen to their friends to find out where they are sending their college application.  Unfortunately their family’s financial circumstance may not allow them to have many college choices. Students do not know that college selection should be an independent decision.  Colleges don’t always give students enough information in a student’s early high school years.  Students and parents need more admission and financial information in these changing economic times.

It appears that colleges are becoming more aware that students a valuable asset.   The economic downturn is a real issue that families must confront.  If not navigating the financial obligation of a four year college education could result in financial pit falls.  For some parents it may mean sending their student to a community college for two years.  Many of the four year colleges have articulation agreements with community colleges.  The reduced cost will give them time to recover from their employment circumstances.  In spite of the challenges these students are facing college attendance is still the right choice.  It is the one life experience that will increase a student earning potential for decades.
